Mr. Lafferty organized a meeting for the evening before the eviction. A dozen households had received the notices, but the Doyles had the dubious honor of being the first family to be driven from their home. It had been just ten days since it had been delivered, just under two weeks since Barnes had died. The police were still investigating the land agent’s death, but none of the boys had talked. Mr. Lafferty had taken the time to speak to each of them individually. Joseph knew what was at stake, and apparently, so did the other boys, as none of them bowed to the pressure from Mr. and Mrs. Kelly or the police. They all stuck to their story, and though Joseph saw in the eyes of the policeman who interviewed him that the man knew he was lying, without witnesses or physical evidence, there was little the Royal Irish Constabulary, the police force set up in Ireland by the occupying English forces, could do. Geoffrey Hetherington was as good as his word, however, and had doubled the rents for every tenant in the parish. With no courts to regulate his actions and with the law on his side, the new landlord was free to do as he wished. And vengeance was his motivation. A meeting at the Doyles’ house was set for six o’clock in the evening.
